Top 10 BBQ recipes

This week is National BBQ Week, so it seems only right to get the grill on and sizzle away, even if the weather isn’t hot enough for me to sizzle (although let’s be honest, I’m a redhead, I can sizzle walking to the car).

I’ve been waiting for what seems like forever for the right weekend to have a barbeque and I’m afraid I can wait no longer, so this Saturday it’s time to throw the steaks on the barbie (I promise that’s as Australian as I’ll get ­and will try to refrain from calling anyone a flamin’ galah).

We all know the standard burger and bun fare that we eat at any old barbeque, but it’s always nice to make a special effort with alfresco dining, because who knows how many opportunities we’ll get in this wonderful, yet unpredictable weathered, country?

Here are my top 10 BBQ recipes which will ensure your next barbie is a sizzling success.

Best BBQ sides

When some of my friends have barbeques, I’m always flabbergasted by how many sides they make. They create a smorgasbord of every weird and wonderful side dish known to man. Well, that’s not my style. Other than the meats, I don’t do much more than 4 sides, because you can’t go wrong with a fresh green salad, a couscous or pasta salad, a potato salad and some corn on the cobs. Done. In fact, a crunchy slaw might take my offering to 5. And I promise, nobody will grumble and all the food will be eaten (which means I wont have to eat it for the next 3 days). Here are some of my failsafe side recipes that I use time and time again.

And that’s it. I’m sure I’ll have very little to do once the coals are hot because you know there will be a rammy with men trying to get to the grill and show off their barbequing skills (which I’ll wholeheartedly encourage as I top up my chilled Sauvignon Blanc). Who said barbeques were hard?
