Polish Style Minced Beef with Cabbage and Caraway

A Trinity of flavours…caraway, cabbage and apple simmered with lean minced beef and bacon for a hearty one-pot meal. Neither a soup nor a stew, best simply mop up the juices with boiled potatoes or crusty bread.

How to cook & Ingredients

25 minutes
serves 4

Ingredients 

450 g lean Scotch Beef mince

1 onion, chopped

4 rashers rindless back bacon, snipped into pieces

350 g (12 oz) white cabbage, halved and shredded

2 tsp caraway seeds

300 ml (half pt) hot beef or vegetable stock

2 cooking apples, peeled, cored and cut into chunks

2 tbsp cider or white wine vinegar

Season to taste

Cooking Method

  • Stir-fry the minced beef, onion and bacon in a large non-stick saucepan until the mince becomes brown and crumbly and the bacon coloured.

  • Add the cabbage, caraway seeds, hot stock, apples and vinegar. Bring to a steady simmer, cover and cook for 20 minutes.

  • Season with a little salt and a generous twist of pepper.

  • Spoon into deep bowls and enjoy.
